Fun and learning at Laina Saba Primary, Kenya 2016, 2018
Students from Sacred Heart High School, Newcastle wrote this after their visit to Kenya in summer 2016: "We began our community work in Laini Saba Primary School, where most of the children come from Kibera, Nairobi and Africa's largest slum. There are no words to describe what we saw, heard and felt when driving through Kibera. Yet the enthusiastic greeting we received when arriving at the school was really touching. Sr Lucy RSCJ together with the students and teachers made us feel like part of the community, teaching each other songs and dances and also playing a few games of football. Their reactions highlighted some of the basic differences between our primary school experience and theirs, such as the sheer excitement of being able to use playdough and colouring pencils. They all jumped at the opportunity for paired reading (literally) because the class sizes mean the chance of one-on-one work is a rarity. At mass the church was filled with song and dance. Being part of this experience was amazing." Another group of students returned in 2018.
During February 2015 half-term, seven members of the sixth form from Sacred Heart High School, Hammersmith, London on a life-changing trip to Mexico City. Through their visit, they embraced the goal of social awareness working together with students from Sagrado Corazon, Mexico City and other visitors from Sacred Heart Taiwan.
